Moana: A Refreshing New Take to Disney Movies

Released in 2016, I can without shame admit that I have seen Moana more than eight times and will, without a doubt, keep increasing that number. As Moana rests among my top five favorite movies, this Disney film never ceases to make me laugh, smile, and sing along to the well-known soundtrack. A lush, refreshing, and empowering film, Moana puts a spin on Disney’s classic princess movies.
The opening scene fills the audience’s ears with the sweet sounds of island music which only makes sense as the movie is set on a pacific island featuring a Polynesian tribe. After hearing Gramma’s story on how the heart of Tafiti will one day need to be returned by a brave soul, the viewer is met by the vibrant blue of the ocean and the various shades of bright greens as one gets their first glimpse of the island of Mutunui.
However, the brilliant colors of the island are only part of the exceptional animation this film includes. Through the movement the “camera” brings to each scene, one would think they were on the boat beside Moana, rocking back and forth to the waves of the ocean. In another scene, zoomed into Maui (shapeshifter, demigod of wind and sea, hero to all) and his jumping tattoo, one can even make out the miniscule ridges lining the shark teeth in his necklace. From the accurate depiction of the setting sun reflecting off of the character’s skin to the various colors making up Moana’s hair and the lifelike camera movements, the animators nailed their jobs of creating a realistic look to the movie.
Nonetheless, the detailed scenes and animation are not the only reason everyone should watch Moana. The dialogue throughout the films creates a funny, light-hearted atmosphere in which viewers of all ages will stay amused. It also creates a refreshing new Disney “princess” movie by not including a love interest, taking place on an island instead of a castle, and having Moana herself play the role of the heroine. Moana even goes as far to tell Maui that she is not actually a princess, but the daughter of the chief (who will one day inherit his position).
The story of Moana proves to not only be refreshing but empowering as well. With the help of her dying grandmother’s wish, Moana sets out to sea on a mission to put back the heart of Tafiti to restore the island’s health and save her people. A self-taught sailor, she somehow finds her way to Maui and demands him to help her with the challenging task. Moana believed she could complete the difficult mission and did so without anyone stopping her. The plot of the movie demonstrates to girls all over that they can accomplish their goals and become their own heroine someday.
There are unending reasons as to why Moana is one of the greatest Disney movies of all time. From the exceptional details to the fast pace, the producers worked hard to create a realistic effect in every scene. Moana is an energizing, amusing movie which not only produces a new take on the classic Disney princess movies but has a powerful meaning behind the enjoyable scenes.

  1. I have also enjoyed watching Moana. You have a very deep level of detail that strongly supports your point the film was crafted well. I definitely do not remember Maui wearing a shark tooth necklace! You sprinkled your opinion into the movie review which adds a reason for people to watch the movie: it promotes women empowerment.

  2. Your movie review was really good! The level of detail that you put into it makes the reader understand your main point: that this movie is worth seeing and also has a great lesson. I actually took a trip to New Zealand a while ago, which is where the Polynesian culture is originally from, and I felt like your paper accurately summed up a lot of aspects of the culture. Nice job!
