The Negative Effects of Outsourcing Labor

In our rapidly globalizing world, the practice of outsourcing labor to third parties has become a common practice among businesses across the world. While offshore outsourcing does seem like a quick and efficient way for firms to maximize profits, in the long run it actually causes more harm to the very firms it was designed to improve. Many studies of this practice primarily focus on how it affects low-skilled labor, such as manufacturing, and ignore its effects on other levels of labor. Examining medium to even high skilled jobs like call centers and even the medical field show that outsourcing does have negative effects on those industries and that in the long run it can cause problems that will end up costing businesses more money in the future.
Before diving into outsourcing it is important to have some background knowledge on what causes business to decide to outsource labor. The main goal of any business is to make money by selling goods or services. The money made from selling goods and services is called revenue, but it is not the final amount of money that the business makes. Businesses also have to keep in mind the costs of producing the goods and services that they will sell, such as building rent and employee wages. By subtracting the total costs (TC) a business faces from the total revenue (TR) it earns we end up with the business’s profit (P). The simple equation of: P = TR - TC is a simpler way of visualizing that. Businesses will always look to maximize profits by maximizing TR or minimizing the TC, and because TR is very dependent on the willingness of consumers to buy their goods or services, it can be hard to consistently maximize TR. However, since businesses often have more control over their costs, minimizing costs is a more efficient way to maximize profits.  In N. Greogry Mankiw’s textbook, “Principles of Microeconomics,” it is stated that the fourth principle of economics is that, “rational people make decisions by comparing costs and benefits, they respond to incentives” (Mankiw, 7). The prospect of cutting costs is incentive enough for many people to turn to outsourcing as a means to maximize profits.
Having knowledge of what leads people to implement outsourcing we can now look at some of the risks that are involved with it. One problem that plagues medium to high skilled labor industries is the loss of knowledge. In Tomás F. Espino-Rodriguez’s article on the effects of outsourcing the IT services of hotel chains in Scotland and Taiwan, he states that outsourcing may lead to a, “ stage of decline that could leave them without the skills and capabilities necessary to compete and/or offer a high-quality service” (Espino-Rodríguez et al. 100). When a company decides to outsource services to another offshore party, they begin to lose the knowledge of how to do that particular service because another company is doing that job for them. This leads to the stage of decline that was mentioned by Espino-Rodriguez, as they will never be able to improve the quality of that service by themselves which could lead to losses in the future if another business with better service enters the market. This stage of decline can be easily avoided if the business decides to insource instead. Jeff Osbornes article on whether research labs should outsource or insource describes insourcing as, “work that could have been contracted out is instead done in-house” (Osborne 44), and while it this method does cost the business a sizeable amount of money in the short run, the benefits that it would bring to the business in the long run make up for the money lost. By implementing training programs, a business would not have to contract outside labor and at the same time improve the livelihood of it’s employees and increase the business’s abilities. This would have the opposite effect of outsourcing, as the business would be able to entire a stage of growth through it’s training programs.
One of the costlier problems that can arise as a result of outsourcing are legal disputes and the fees that accompany them. An article written by Richard Feyrer that addresses the costs and benefits of outsourcing labor in the cardiovascular engineering industry acknowledges this potential risk when it states that, “The hospital can also be confronted with disadvantages if the partner becomes insolvent or legal disputes arise” (Feyrer et al. 293). Legal battles can take years in court and coupled with the hefty legal fees can add up to billions of dollars wasted. Another externality that can have negative effects on a business is the potential of human error in the third party. While human error is a possibility in any business, the probability of it occurring when outsourcing is implemented is increased as more people get involved as miscommunication is more likely to happen. An article on the website The Economist published by the Schumpeter Blog also addresses this issue. In the article Schumpeter talks about how Boeing’s decision to outsource manufacturing parts for the 787 Dreamliner lead billions of dollars and time being wasted, reporting that, “Some of the parts did not fit together. Some of the dozens of sub-contractors failed to deliver their components on time, despite having sub-contracted their work to sub-sub-contractors; it will be billions over budget and three years behind schedule”(Schumpeter, 2011). Boeing’s failure in the production of the 787 Dreamliner should be proof to anyone that this method of manufacturing can come with devastating costs.
The costs that come with outsourcing labor as we will see not only affects the businesses that implement it, but also the temporary workers that are employed. Often times the workers that are the source of the outsourced labor are not given the proper wages. This phenomena is explained in Matthew Pierlott’s article discussing the morality of outsourcing labor where he states that, “if the supplier (of labor) is independent of the corporation (that is buying the labor); it becomes problematic for the corporation to police these independent suppliers and ensure the just treatment of the laborers” (Pierlott 592), and because most companies do contract labor from multiple suppliers this mistreatment of laborers affects millions of workers around the world and contributes to the continuation of the cycle of poverty. An example of this event happening can be seen in David G. Van Arsdale’s article on how outsourcing can lead to poverty. Arsdale’s article offers a great case study of this event as he reminisces about his time as a Waste Management (WM) company worker in New York and how WM’s decision to outsource labor hurt him and the workers that eventually replaced him. Within the article he talks about one of the temporary workers, Pete, who was not being compensated correctly because, “the temporary staffing industry gets away with (illegally) paying temps only for their work performed for clients regardless of how long they wait on-call” (Arsdale 91). Pete relies solely on temporary jobs given to him by a labor supplier and because he is not paid correctly he lives in poverty as a 50 year old man and is unable to retire. Even though Pete is employed he mentions how he feels like he has no control over his life because of the position that the staffing company has put him in.
After looking at all the causes and effects of outsourcing labor it is clear that many of the risks that accompany this method hurt both the businesses that outsource and the workers that provide that labor. While it does seem like a cost effective solution to maximize profits, in the long run it can cause more harm to the businesses through legal disputes, miscommunication, and by stunting their intellectual growth. It can even hurt the workers it provides jobs to, as in many cases like Pete’s there is no regulation on how they are paid. Other methods, such as insourcing labor, while costing more at the onset, will benefit the company and it’s employees far more in the long run.

Why the war on drugs is a failure

“In war, no one wins or loses. There is only destruction” - Bao Ninh. Sometimes, wars that aren’t actually real wars can be the most lethal. In 1970, following a major opioid crisis, Congress passed the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970. This categorized controlled substances based on their medicinal use and potential for addiction. In 1971, Nixon declared drugs the “public enemy number one”. This is when most people associate the start of the drug crackdown throughout the world. The war on drugs by the U.S government should be abolished because it’s a detriment to society, unethical, and a complete failure.

the wage gap in athletics

Male and Female athletes are treated extremely different in the sports industry as a whole.
One specific issue with this is the wage gap. In basketball specifically, women make a very small
amount compared to men. While the men make millions, women make a few hundred thousand.
I will specifically be looking at the wage gaps of different sports for athletes, coaches, and officials.
I am arguing that the way women are treated in sports is incredibly unfair, because they are paid
substantially less for doing the same work. In conclusion, I will be analyzing data of different sports
to determine why the wage gap between male and female athletes is so large and what can be done
to solve this issue.

Grade Inflation and How to Fix It

Every student strives for As, and some may think that any grade lower than an A is unacceptable, but what if Bs and Cs were good enough too? If you think about it, a C on the grading scale should be the average grade, a B should be above average, and an A should be excellence. Average school grades across the nation have been constantly increasing over the last few decades, but this isn’t necessarily a good thing. According to Grade Inflation: A Crisis in College Education, 45% of higher education students in 1997 were given As when it was just 10% in the 1960s (Johnson 14). This is the effect of grade inflation, or a rise in the average grades students receive. Higher average grades reward mediocrity, so good grades rarely mean high achievement anymore. Students, teachers, and schools all contribute to grade inflation, which needs to be combatted simultaneously at all education levels so students can have more academic pride in their hard work, and GPAs can more accurately represent student achievement.
In order to get grades back where they should be, there must be a drastic but simultaneous change across all teaching institutions. If only one school decides to reform its grading policy, the school would appear as if it has many underperforming students in comparison to other schools. That school could face consequences of lower enrollment and less funding due to its new negative reputation. But if every school follows similar grade reform at the same time, then all students will have lowered grades and the competition is still fair. This process begins with teachers seeing the value in giving honest feedback on students’ work in the form of grades. It may appear that awarding higher grades makes students happier, but this is already known to be misleading. If a professor truly cares about the progress of their students, he/she should grade as honestly as possible so students can see that they have room to grow. When students receive honest grades, they can find and learn from their mistakes, as well as get a much better understanding of their academic performance.
Overall, inflating grades has not done students any favors over the last few decades. Because of grade inflation, students have become unmotivated and have lost confidence in themselves academically. Even professors have shown diminished morals by assigning higher grades than students deserve. Grades have a purpose other than making students feel they are doing well one hundred percent of the time. Grades should reflect the effort and achievement of students, so they can truly be proud of their grades. Professors who care about the well-being of their students should grade them on their effort and quality, instead of curving grades to make themselves or the students look better on paper. Grade inflation can be controlled by only allowing students to evaluate teachers on their ability to provide quality education. The grade inflation reduction reform has to be universal, and all schools at all levels must accept the new grading policies. Truly successful students can emerge when all schools and faculty cooperate to combat the causes and effects of grade inflation.

2nd Short Post. Response to in-class presentation ESPM

Environmental and Natural Resource Economics
Jay Coggins came to our class to talk about environmental and natural resource economics last Thursday. He started of his presentation by explaining where most of the humans energy comes from. He claimed that if society moves to mostly renewable energy and eliminate all fossil fuels it would benefit our environment greatly but cost hundreds of trillions of dollars. Every year renewable sources get much cheaper while energy plants that use resources like coal stay around the same because they constantly have to buy materials and run the plant. Most renewable energy sources once they are up can stay running at a relatively low cost like solar panels and wind turbines. It may be expensive to setup these solar panels or wind turbines but would save society a tremendous amount of money in the long run. People claim that moving to renewable sources is more costly than continuing to use what we use now but Professor Coggins said it is not. There is actually a 2 trillion dollar difference between moving to renewable energy then if we were to do nothing and stay doing the same things we are today. He continued to strengthen his stance by giving examples like the cost of a solar panel is just 10% of what it was 10 to 15 years ago while the process of burning coal and fossil fuels has remained the same. All in all, Professor Coggins claims that is important to switch to renewable energy for economic reasons and for the environment.
Questions: Why aren’t there more solar or wind farms if it is cheaper?

How effective are these renewable sources?

Abstract

Ocean plastic levels are increasing at a rapid rate which affects aquatic ecosystems; consequently, the rising rate should lead to the United States of America banning single use plastics. While many people know about the terrifying visible effects like straws in turtles noses and plastic rings around penguins necks; they do not know about the effects to the ecosystem when the plastic dissolves into the water. My project will show the effects of plastic dissolving into the water and that banning all single use plastics will help solve this problem. I am examining data from scientists worldwide that show the amount of ocean plastic, effects of ocean plastic, and the ways in which the problem can be solved. I will show that this data supports the banning of single use plastics in the U.S. and that it indeed is a problem that needs to be addressed. In conclusion I will use the data collected from scientists worldwide to show that single use plastics are causing the pollution of ocean ecosystems and that they should be banned from the U.S.

Atomic Bomb Research Paper Intro - (Short Blog Post #2)

Post Atomic Bomb - Intro Paragraph

August 6th, 1945, was a normal day in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagaski, nothing was unusual about the Americans flying above,  air raids were common. The US usually sent planes above the island do reconnaissance. But then the whole mood shifted, as the planes swerved and diverted course, something they had never done before. Before the citizens knew what was truly happening above them an object came hurtling towards their feet. Then came a blinding flash and a massive explosion that incinerated miles of city and anything inside of them including themselves. If they were “lucky” enough to survive, the city became a living hell for the survivors. After the chaos and destruction from Atomic Bombs dissipated. Hiroshima and Nagasak were left in ruins, the United States  had left a lasting impact by using the Atomic Bombs on Japan, the people and the country itself felt many lasting effects such in the short and long term. But, most Importantly the Atomic Bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were permanent impulsive solutions to a problem that could have been handled in a far better way. Due to this, it created a laundry list of problems for Japan that will be explained and show why Atomic bombs should never be put to use again. Based on eyewitness accounts the cities looked as if hell had overcome and engulfed the city, Hiroshima and Nagaski became unrecognizable to their inhabitants. Along with the city looking like hell on earth they were now confronted with an extensive laundry list of problems currently and which would arise in the future. The large majority of the issues caused by the Atomic Bomb would be physical injuries, such as broken bones, burns, etc. After physical injuries, psychological issues were a close second issue in the short and long term, the most common psychological issues were issues such as PTSD and depression. Finally Japan's environment and the and the economy were virtually erased off the map in an instant by the atomic bomb. Once again, the Atomic Bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were permanent impulsive solutions to a problem that could have been handled in a far better way. Due to this, it created a laundry list of problems that will be discussed and why Atomic bombs should never be used now.

rough draft of research paper

Space Force
On June 18th, 2018 President Donald Trump announced his plan for a 6th branch of the military, Space Force. This branch would replace the existing division within the Air Force that’s focused on space. Many people in the US dismissed this announcement as one of the President’s claims like drain the swamp or build the wall that would never come to pass. I don’t know whether Space Force will ever be fully realized as the 6th branch of the military, but if is does then there could be massive benefits. The creation of Space Force would increase government spending into technological development, that would prove to be very beneficial to Americans in their daily lives, for people around the world, and would be a crucial step towards the future.

What is Space Force
After Space Force was announced by the President, Vice President Mike Pence laid out the plan for the Proposed 6th branch of the military at the National Space Council meeting. The announcement of Space Force by the Vice President cited recent demonstrations of space technology by the Russian and Chinese space programs and stressed the importance of not only an American space presence but rather American space domination. The Vice President emphasized the importance of rivaling the increasing presence of Russia and China in space. This was a rather divisive announcement, which is not out of the norm for America or for the current administration. The plan for Space Force created three subdivisions within Space force, the Space Development Agency, the Space Operations Force, and the United States Space Command.
The three agencies within Space Force each cover different important aspects of space. The SDA would work to improve national security capabilities by developing new technologies for space. The SOF’s goal is to provide space expertise to the combat commanders and to the rest of Space Force. The SOF would effectively act as the geek squad of Space Force and provide whatever relevant information that anyone within Space Force might need. Finally, the USSC is the armed forces division of Space Force and would handle any conflicts that arose, being led by a 4-star general, or a flag officer, and using the resources provided by the rest of Space Force.
Space Force would mostly be information based, looking at screens in a room that are covered with information that has been gathered by their satellites. You won’t be seeing any space ships with US Space Force written across the side piloted by some Han Solo type, at least not anytime soon. This is because the plan for Space Force does not currently include any plans to send anyone to the Moon or to Mars. That area is already being covered by private companies such as Boeing and SpaceX. Space Force will work indirectly with these companies as they have deals and relations with NASA which will be used in the Research and Development aspect in the SDA. This will lead to an increase in development of new technologies that will produce more advanced satellites, spaceships and technologies that can improve the quality of life for people on earth. An example of this came from the need for air in space which led to the development of technology that is now used to improve indoor air quality around the world.

Why people don't want Space Force
Many people inside and out of America understandably dislike the President and much of what he has done to America and the world. The announcement of Space Force may have been discarded by people along with many of the MAGA three-word chants such as “build the wall” or “lock her up.” To me the dismissal of Space Force, is short sighted, as in science fiction there are two main outcomes for the future of the world; a post-apocalyptic wasteland or a technologically advanced space fairing world. Given a choice I would prefer the latter of the two options, and I see some form of a Space Force as the first step towards that preferential outcome.
Another reason for people to not support Space Force is the lack of motivation. In the 1960’s all of America seemed to rally behind the idea of scientific exploration in the space race with the motivation of victory behind us. Now there is no clear threat or idea that is bringing us together, however there are threats that are unknown to the public, that I think might warrant this kind of reaction. For example, there have been demonstrations of new technologies by other countries space programs in recent years. In 2007 China’s military launched a missile that tracked a Chinese satellite, traveling 500+ miles up and destroying it. In 2014 Russians launched Object 2014-E28 that can attach itself to satellites. These technologies could easily destroy US satellites that provide us with information that we use on a daily basis, such as Google Maps, weather, both current and information for future forecasts, and global communication.
The US military expenditure has steadily increased from about $300 billion in 2000 to well over $500 billion in 2014. With the addition of Space Force, the expenditure could increase much more substantially to fund the creation of such a program. Space Force would require a large amount of capital to employ people and substantially more for the research and development of new technologies. The sheer cost of Space Force is enough to question if it is a necessary addition to the US military.

How Space Force could be bad
Space Force isn’t all positives as it is a military operation. Such an operation could create several problems that could produce less than ideal outcomes possibly even war. Space Force could lead to increased international tensions as these technologies would increase the probability of international espionage. In addition, the testing of these new technologies could lead to satellite crashes which could shutdown certain services, or debris from the satellites could lead to a chain reaction that could hit and destroy hundreds of satellites or even the International Space Station, which could prove to be catastrophic for satellite-based services and future satellites/shuttle launches. To address these problems, the earth is huge, and the chances of a satellite crash is very low, and as technologies advance, satellite detection and countermeasures will be put in place to make the chances of crashing much lower than they already are. Many of the other problems have already been evaluated by the UN and there are some provisions in place to avoid such problems. It is illegal to have weapons of mass destruction on a satellite of space shuttle, so people don’t need to worry about a war starting and being bombed from space.

As technology advances and the rest of the world turns towards space as the next domain, the US must too develop some form of space program that can contend. Space Force in some capacity is the necessary next step akin to when planes or boats were first used in warfare; the side that did not utilize such technology was at a severe disadvantage, in both offensive and defensive capabilities.

Excerpt from Movie Review

The Wes Anderson film Moonrise Kingdom opens during a thunderstorm, in an idyllic summer home in Massachusetts. The warm, faded interior of the home illuminated by yellow light provides an immediate contrast to the weather outdoors, intensified by an orchestral soundtrack. These opening elements continue throughout the movie: the stormy weather comes back in the climax, a stunning set is consistent, and the opening music is as dramatic as the story itself.  The storyline of Moonrise Kingdom may be easy to criticize, but the whimsical nature of the film, the beautiful scenery, and its dark, ironic humor make it an endearing one.
The audience is first introduced to one of the movie’s two protagonists, Suzy (Kara Hayward), a resident of the summer home. She’s somewhat of a dark young girl with an intense stare and an unsmiling face. During the film, we come to know she is considered “extremely troubled” by her parents and disliked by peers. This parallels our other hero, Sam (Jared Gilman), an orphan staying at Camp Ivanhoe on the same island as Suzy. Just like her, he has a troubled past and no friends. This is where their stories intersect, after meeting at a church play. They correspond through letters, lamenting how out of place they both are, and plan an escape from their prospective lives into the woods together.
As with other Wes Anderson films, the setting is the highlight of the movie. Each set is intricately designed and decorated. Suzy’s home, the camp, and even the local church seem whimsical and idyllic. Much of the movie takes place in the outdoors, the product being fantastic shots of coastal woodland. The resulting scenery is both aesthetically pleasing and nostalgic, with the props and costumes fitting of 1965, the year in which Moonrise Kingdom takes place. The strategic filming adds to the magic of Suzy and Sam’s story; it feels like anything is possible in this eccentric little world.

Introduction to Favorite Corner of the Internet
If someone were to ask me what my favorite television show is, it wouldn’t take long for me to spew out “The Bachelor franchise”. “The Bachelor”, “The Bachelorette”, and “Bachelor in Paradise” have been three of my favorite shows since the beginning of high school and some may say I’m slightly obsessed. Not only did I decorate my graduation cap Bachelor related, but I’ve also hosted dozens of watch parties with friends. I definitely have my fair share of favorites (and least favorites), but Becca Tilley is by far my favorite contestant and needless to say, I was absolutely thrilled when she announced she was starting a podcast. While I was obsessed after the first episode, soon after, she started including her best friend, Tanya Rad, the co-host of Ryan Seacrest’s radio show, on the podcast, drastically increasing the humor of the show. If there’s any chance you like humor with a bit of seriousness, celebrity guests, and Grey’s Anatomy recaps, Becca and Tanya’s podcast, “Scrubbing in With Becca Tilley and Tanya Rad”, is for you.
“Scrubbing In” is an outlet I can go to whenever I need a quick laugh. Tanya and Becca always have crazy things happening to them, which makes for some funny stories that are told. In addition, “Tanyaisms” occur quite frequently, where Tanya messes up common phrases that are now known to “Scrubbing In” listeners as what she said them as. Instead of “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”, Tanya refers to it as “one man’s pie is another man’s pleasure”.
Not only this, but they partake in quizzes, ranging from “Grey’s Anatomy” knowledge to friendship quizzes, where the winner gets to text someone off the other girl’s phone. Celebrity

guests often call in, ranging from Hilary Duff to Derek Hough, which brings an added bonus to any episode. If one couldn’t tell by the name of the podcast, Becca and Tanya are huge “Grey’s Anatomy” fans, as am I, so hearing their personal recaps offer a new perspective of the show. The two girls go as far as wearing scrubs to record the podcast, which I could only imagine being a part of.
While I’ve listened to other former Bachelor stars’ podcasts in the past, I can’t seem to enjoy them as much as I do this one. “Scrubbing In” incorporates so many elements that go way past Bachelor world, which helps me realize that they are just normal people who happened to be on television for a few months. This podcast is the only one I’ve attempted to listen to that never fails to put a smile on my face or put me in an instantly brighter mood. In fact, whenever I listen in public, I have to conceal my laugh, as at least once an episode, I find myself laughing out loud in regards to hilarious stories that they always seem to have. I think that Becca and Tanya’s friendship is the part that makes me the happiest because it reminds me of my best friend and I. Their constant “bickering”, yet they always know what the other is going to say next simply makes me smile. One of the things that I love most about “Scrubbing In” is how open Becca and Tanya are, as it shows how relatable they are and how much they care about their fans. A feature of the earlier episodes of the podcast were listener emails, where listeners would send in either questions or scenarios, and Becca and Tanya would answer with their best solutions. The girls care so much about their listeners, which makes it easier to be a loyal fan.
Overall, this podcast is one that I will stick with until it ends. From the many laughs to heartfelt stories, Tanya and Becca sure know how to make my day. “Scrubbing In With Becca Tilley and Tanya Rad” has me wishing that a new podcast episode were released every single

Kubiak 3
day rather than every Monday. I believe anyone should give this podcast a try, regardless if they are familiar with “The Bachelor” or not.

Natural disasters cause many problems but they also teach us things. Animals have reportedly acted strangely before disasters for centuries but it’s very difficult to prove scientifically. Part of the difficulty stems from the fact that animals are animals and don’t always do things the way humans do. Another has to do with behavior, it’s very difficult to give quantitative values to actions. Despite a lack of scientific proof there is an abundance of anecdotal evidence about strange behaviors across many species. The article suggests that because animals have stronger senses such as smell in dogs they perceive things we can’t,  “they may be able to smell changes in the air before natural disasters”(dilonardo). It’s very likely the small changes could warn and protect them. Although there is definite evidence about animal senses it’s difficult to know how animals use them.

The article sites many different sources to help support the claim of a sixth sense in animals. The more definite facts come from research studies done by scientists while the overwhelming number of real world examples come from regular people in today’s world and throughout history. The article seeks to answer an important question but currently there is no perfect answer just hypotheses about animals and their abilities. Luckily for those doing research animals all over the world have reportedly predicted disasters of many types. If scientists can find a way to prove and record animal reactions animals could help provide advanced warning in the future.

This article does an excellent job of giving information clearly and correctly. Even though a lot of evidence comes from people the article tells the reader how first hand accounts can be faulty. The article also uses various types of evidence from different studies and animals. Anyone could read understand what points are made by the author about animal abilities. People with pets or who have seen firsthand animal reactions can relate the evidence and curiosity around animals.

Generally the article raises a good question but ultimately answers a different one. Although questioning if animals have an additional sense the answer remains inconclusive biased on evidence and analysis written by the author. That being said, the article does give reasonable theories about strange behaviors. The possibility that animals don’t react as much or as strongly as has been documented and that humans are unintentionally creating evidence.
Although interesting this idea is also virtually impossible to prove sciencetifically. Another idea the article mentions is that the animals don’t have an extra sense but instead are just using senses stronger than our own. The numerical evidence definitely helps prove this suggestion is more likely.

Dilonardo , Mary Jo. “Do Animals Have a Sixth Sense about Natural Disasters?” Mnn.com, 11 Oct. 2018, www.mnn.com/earth-matters/animals/stories/do-animals-have-sixth-sense-about-disasters.

Scott Pilgrim Versus the World Movie Review

Scott Pilgrim Versus the World
If you go to a movie theater today the major of the movies you’ll see advertised are for comic book movies or the same average action movie with a different set of CGI bad guys put on top of it. Based on the idea, you’d think Scott Pilgrim Versus the World was the same thing another movie trying to be a comic book, but you’d be very wrong because this movie is much more than another comic book movie. Watching the movie you can obviously tell that the director, Edgar Wright, has a devotion to comic books and wanted the small things that make them what they are into a movie, without a massive CGI battle of heroes versus hordes of faceless bad guys. He doesn’t take just the plot of a comic book and slap it on screen, it is impossible to not notice the style of this movie. This style is consistent throughout the movie and never feels out of place. Another thing this Scott Pilgrim Versus the World does is it uses the classic rom-com and coming of age styles and plots to use your expectations of those kinds of movies for its own advantage. You could say all these things boil down to Edgar Wright’s style and specifically his editing. Edgar Wright’s editing and cinematography in Scott Pilgrim Versus the World make it stand out as one of the most fun, creative, and energetic movies recently made.
Scott Pilgrim Versus the World is about a 20-year-old awkward guy from Toronto, Canada named Scott, played by Michael Cera (of course). When the movie starts Scott is in a struggling band and dating a high schooler named Knives Chau, in a relationship that isn’t a necessarily serious adult relationship. Scott is taking a passive role in his life, taking on whatever comes his way nonchalantly. Until he meets a girl named Ramona Flowers, he falls in love with her and wants to begin a relationship with her, however, in order to do this he has to defeat her “seven evil exes". Meanwhile, Scott’s band is in a big battle of the bands in which the winner gets a record deal and will theoretically instantly become successful. As he progresses through the seven evil exes, his band progresses through the battle of the bands, ending in a band battle against two of the evil exes. After the battle, Scott finds out that the head of the record company is the final evil ex and that Ramona is still in love with him. Scott and the final evil ex battle and Scott wins, however, he ends up choosing to be with Knives Chau, as she was the one that was supportive of him and loved him unconditionally.
The comic book style with this movie comes out in many ways that all work together to make one cohesive idea. Edgar Wright uses the comic book font and actual writing to make a lot of sounds and visuals spelled out, but he also uses them to further the plot. For example, in the scene where Scott first meets Ramona at a party, there’s writing edited to be on the wall which tells the story of how he embarrassed himself and follows Ramona around the party. The transitions between scenes in this movie, however, are the truly amazing part about it. Every transition is creatively done in a unique way. Each transition is timed so perfectly that you almost barely notice them. Each transition has a visual change or cue and an audio clip with it, these can form of anything as simple as a person walking across the screen with a skateboard sound to transition one sidewalk scene to another, or a very impressive transition in which Scott goes to the bathroom in his band’s house and walks out the door into a high school in a dream state. Overall Scott Pilgrim Versus the World is an amazing movie with a unique voice and style that is very hard to pick up on what exactly makes it so, unless you’re paying a lot of attention to the details Edgar Wright leaves in.

Fade In to a Close-Up Shot of Cinefix

The Youtube channel Cinefix, which focuses on analysis of various aspects of film, helps viewers gain a greater appreciation for film and a better understanding of how cinematography is used to tell a story. With videos ranging from “7 Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know About Jaws” to “5 Brilliant Moments of Camera Movement”, this Youtube channel analyzes film in many different ways including videos that: compare movies to their respective books, review new movies coming out in theaters, discuss the use of audio, and even recreations of movies on a lower budget. There truly is something for everyone on this Youtube channel.
Some people might say, “What’s the point of watching a Youtube channel about movies when I could just watch a movie?”. Although movies are definitely a great way to spend free time, there are also many great benefits from Cinefix that can’t come from just watching movies. One of these benefits is the amount of time that it takes to watch the videos. Often times, a person’s free time is spread out in small chunks throughout the day and they don’t have the time to sit down for a solid 90 minutes and watch a full movie. With Cinefix video lengths averaging at around 10 minutes, it’s easy to watch videos on the bus or while you’re waiting in line for lunch. This amount of flexibility makes Cinefix a good way to use your free time while also keeping up with daily life and responsibilities.
Another perk of Cinefix is that it increases the viewer’s appreciation for cinematography and the inner workings of how a film is made. It is easy to see the actors and focus solely on them, but there is also a lot of effort put into each scene and camera angle. Close up shots, long shots, over the shoulder shots, pans, cuts, zooms: all of these techniques are used by cinematographers to tell the story of the film and use the medium of film to its fullest potential. By watching Cinefix videos, movie-goers gain a new perspective, and start seeing some of these methods in the movies that they watch. Film takes a whole new light, and by re-watching past favorites, viewers can enjoy parts of the movie that they never even knew were there in the first place. Movies become more fun and interesting once you understand all of the time and care that was put into each shot.
Cinefix also has a great blend of entertainment and information. Many Youtube channels are either all information or all entertainment. It’s not everyday that someone can say they learned something and had fun doing it. By using popular movie examples and having a variety of charismatic presenters, the videos are always captivating and fun. At the same time, the presenters know the information that they are presenting. Many of them have degrees in film or cinematography, and have collectively watched thousands of movies. As they’re talking, it almost feels like a conversation. The videos feel relaxed, and yet, insightfully deep.
By digging into the behind the scenes details of film, Cinefix provides an informative and entertaining video series that will forever change how the viewer watches and interprets movies.

Favorite corner of the internet

Under appreciated Talent of the Internet
When asked to think of my favorite corner of the internet, it was hard. Most of the places I venture to are very highly trafficked websites like Twitter, ESPN, Reddit, Amazon, etc. I had to narrow down the specific areas I like about each of those popular websites, and while I was doing this, I was listening to music. The thing is, every time I am on the internet, I have music in my ears and I realized that my favorite part of the internet is having access to almost every piece of music ever created. I like to listen to a lot of spotify, consisting of mostly mainstream rap, R&B, and alternative, but my favorite corner of the internet is musical covers of popular songs because they offer an interesting switch-up from the same artists and songs that we hear every day.

The website that I use to find these covers is Youtube, and while I love watching funny pranks, sports highlights, and conspiracy theories, this is my favorite side of youtube because it receives little attention. The musician I want to highlight today is Justice Der, who is a synth/electric guitarist that covers semi-popular R&B and alternate music. He mostly covers songs of artists like Frank Ocean, BROCKHAMPTON and Daniel Caesar. The reason I got into his music in the first place was from trying to find an instrumental for one of Frank Ocean’s songs and stumbling upon one of his covers. His smooth construction of the melodies encapsulated me and somehow I become increasingly impressed with each new cover of a song that he releases. He has even inspired me to buy a guitar and learn how to play it. I haven’t yet gotten one, but I think the perfect time for me to start is winter break when I can make money and devote my time to the craft of learning an instrument.
Justice Der has 79,000 subscribers which doesn’t really make him that big of an unknown in the musical cover business, but when I first discovered him about a year ago he only had about 8,000 subscribers. He has never let his voice be heard in any of his videos and does most of them in his concrete bedroom with only his bed and a Pulp Fiction poster in the background. His videos are very minimalist and only features the music that he is performing. I like the way he lets his music do the talking and isn’t greedy by doing advertisements or asking people to donate money to him, although he probably deserves it. Clearly, other people appreciate that aspect of his videos too, as a few of his videos hit 300,000 views. Not only do people watch is videos, but his like to dislike ratio is insanely good on most of them. His “Japanese Denim” cover has 18,000 likes to only 71 dislikes. His comments are full of positive feedback with some examples being “Somebody somewhere, somehow, HAS to sign you guys to something,” and “My heart just melted into butter”.
Ultimately though, my words cannot do his music nearly enough Justice (see what I did there?). I hope that the reader and anybody else with internet access and a love for good music are able to listen to him because he has brought good feelings and moments to many people including myself.  Justice Der deserves a lot more recognition for his talent and hard work and that is why this is my favorite corner of the internet.

Favorite Corner of the Internet

The internet contains more information and insight than any one person would be able to explore, but one of the most interesting and astounding corners of this interconnected social web is the images found under the “wanderlust” tag on instagram.

Wanderlust is described as the strong desire to travel. I have found that many people who have this desire are able to capture their adventures through the art of photography. Photography can be used to tell a story, express a feeling, or even simply inspire an individual. While scrolling endlessly through my instagram feed, I often find myself drifting further and further into the niche area of exploration photos. These images continuously capture my attention as they display the beauty that can be found in travel, and have the power to bring a person to a location they may never otherwise experience. I have always found an interest in photography, and like many other photographers I share a passion for exploration and discovery. I have found myself using the captivating images from the adventures of others as inspiration as I stare down the lens of my own camera. More specifically, I have found that scenery photos that include the traveler cause me to gain wanderlust myself, fueling my aspirations to explore the world for myself, and discover experience I can gain from each unique corner of the world. When one finds him or her self exploring this corner of the internet, often times it is easy to forget what is going on around you as you dive deeper and deeper into the travels of others. In a way, by looking at these photos, you can imagine yourself there with the photographer, allowing you a small, yet inspiring glimpse of the beauty that was captured during the moment that photo was taken. I find this inspiring because it makes a person desire exploration, and often times can be motivating as you feel that you should go out and do something productive. Furthermore, you can learn a lot about different cultures or locations based on the ideas that are embedded within each photo.
For example, the photos that appear under the “wanderlust” category portray a whole different life than yours, which allows you insight on a lifestyle or culture that you may never be exposed to. You may find yourself in a mountain village, or trekking through the Egyptian desert, but each photo that you see is an artistic expression of something diverse, which in turn gives you a more detailed insight on just how different and unique each part of the world is.

Overall exploring this vast category of images can provoke thoughts and even inspire wanderlust in the viewer themselves. It is a mixture of art, culture and nature that makes this corner of the internet so special. It is truly unique in the way in which it has the power to provoke thoughts and aspirations.
