How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days

In the movie How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, you watch the dramatic love story between a female cosmetics writer, Andie Anderson, and an advertising executive, Benjamin Barry. Andie is faced with the task of writing a column about how to lose a guy in ten days, while Ben must make a girl fall in love with him in ten days.  With opposing tasks, they find each other and choose one another as the targets of their challenges.
The casting was done spectacularly. The acting styles of Kate Hudson, who played Andie Anderson, and Matthew McConaughey, who played Benjamin Barry, compliment each other very well, making for a very good movie. While Kate had to act completely insane, Matthew had to act calm, cool, and collected. They played extremely different roles, which complimented each other beautifully.
There was pop music throughout the entire movie which really set the scene for a good, dramatic, chick flick. The soundtrack was good, getting louder and more rhythmic during the intense scenes. The songs that were chosen really went along with the theme of the movie. One song, “You’re So Vain,” is sung twice in the movie, in two completely different scenes.
The main characters, Andie and Ben, have a lot in common, despite living two completely different lives. They share a love for basketball and go to multiple games together throughout the duration of the film.  Andie must act crazy, because she is trying to lose Ben within ten days, while Ben is forced to be compassionate and willing to put up with her antics in order to make her fall for him within ten days.  They are faced with opposite tasks and forced to take on opposite personalities despite their eerily similar personalities.
The dialogue is casual, and much what you would expect from a chick flick. They use relatively simple words, the conversations are easy to follow, and there is never much of a doubt as to what is going on. The conversations flow well, with Andie and Ben feeding off each other’s energy. Ben shows a great amount of patience and compassion with Andie, causing the viewers to fall in love with him.
Visually, the viewers learn right away that the movie takes place in a very busy city. The difference between their two offices seems very accurate and is depicted very well. Andie’s office, that of a Cosmetics magazine, is mostly females and has white walls and furniture and is very chic.  Ben’s office, that of an advertising executive for sports, is mostly men, with wood frames, and a carpet.  It makes it very evident, how unalike these two are, despite the similarities, such as basketball.
Overall, it was a very well put together movie. The audio, writing, characters, and visual design complimented each other in a way that made it a very enjoyable presentation for the viewers. There was just the right mix of drama and seriousness.

  1. I have debated watching this movie every time I go on Netflix but your review finally pushed me over to give it a try! I liked how you described the relationships between the main characters as a perfect balance. I think that is very common in movies but also makes the movie much more likable. Great review!

  3. This movie is always on cable TV and I always have watched short snippets before switching channels. Your review definitely persuades me to give it another shot. Rom-coms have grown on me lately and this one seems to have great actors and actresses. Thanks for the review

  4. Typically it is difficult to depict a good relationship on screen as the actors, but it seems that the actors in the movies are well fit for their respective roles and the conversations they have are fun and interesting. I have never watched this movie, but after reading your review, I definitely want to watch this movie!
